Designed by the award winning architectural practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the state-of-the-art college was built under the Government’s BSF (Building Schools for the Future) scheme.
CCL’s main objectives while working on the project were to increase the floor-to-floor programme cycle, create a fair-faced soffit and achieve cost savings by reducing slab depth when compared to traditional RC slabs. A 325 mm/300 mm PT flat slab was installed throughout the structure in order to maximise the open and exposed feel of the building. CCL designed all horizontal floor plates, which included a vibration analysis for all levels, and installed its XF flat-slab system.
The structure also featured a transfer beam allowing a column above to be offset, and two five-metre propped cantilever slabs for the staircases.
Because the building is located next to an existing school in a residential area, pour sizes were designed to meet SGG requirements, one of CCL’s collaborators on the project. By doing this, enough concrete was delivered to complete the concrete pour in one single attempt, and disruption to the surrounding area was minimised.
